Harriet Tubman North Star Village

We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Christine Warnke, a former member of the DC Commission of Human Rights, as an advisor to Alpha Genesis Community Development Corporation (AGCDC). Dr. Warnke passionately believes that art and history are not just reflections of our past; they are vital forces that convey Harriet Tubman’s extraordinary courage and resilience in the pursuit of freedom. This mission is particularly important in fostering community spirit in Cambridge, Maryland, located 12 miles from Tubman's birthplace.
AGCDC has been diligently working in Cambridge’s historic downtown, promoting cultural tourism and creative placemaking that have revitalized the area and bolstered economic equity. Our ambitious plan, the North Star Village, aims to rehabilitate the properties surrounding the nationally acclaimed Harriet Tubman mural, “Take My Hand.” This transformative project will be executed in three phases:
Phase 1 focuses on the revitalization of the property at 428-432 Race Street. Our innovative plans include the creation of five new retail outlets on the first floor, accompanied by a stunning exhibition deck on the second story that offers a breathtaking view of the Harriet Tubman mural. Furthermore, AGCDC will finally establish a permanent headquarters, enhancing our capacity to serve the community.
Phase 2 will beautify and improve the rear parking lot, turning it into a vibrant viewing area for the “Take My Hand” mural, created by the talented Michael Rosato. This area will feature an overhead solar panel to protect visitors from adverse weather and host a flourishing community garden that invites local engagement and sustainability.
Phase 3 involves the rehabilitation of the historic Woolworth Building located at 420- 422 Race St. This project has earned State Historic Tax Credits in 2022 which will restore it to its former glory while updating the infrastructure to meet the needs of today's business and technology. This mixed-use initiative will feature three new retail spaces on the first floor, with residential units above, breathing new life into a building that is currently in urgent need of major repairs.
